Happy Victoria Day!

Happy Victoria Day to my fellow Canadians! This is our first long weekend of, and the unofficial kick-off to summer.  Initially the forecast called for rain and thunderstorms all weekend, but we’ve had lots of sun and minimal rain (although today the storm clouds are rolling in).  The garden centres were a buzz of activity as people were taking advantage of the great weather and heading outside to plant the garden.  My parents came down for a visit, which was great.  We had some great meals and saw the movie Thor (highly recommended if you like the comic-action movies like I do).  My parents took a day trip south to some vineyards on Saturday, but I stayed put to reclaim my balcony.

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, then you may remember my summer-long battles with the squirrels.  While I have battled them since I moved here, the squirrel-capades began here when they built a nest on my patio and chewed my garden tools. It continued with some unique hiding spots for their peanuts, and they kicked it up a notch last year eating my patio furniture

Last year I bought very cheap plants and placed chicken wire in all my planters to keep them from digging and destroying the flowers.  It worked and I had planned on doing so again this year.

I hadn’t been able to get the balcony ready for the summer as we’ve had a solid week of rain, and I’ve had other things on the go.  I noticed that there were two small squirrels who kept coming back.  Last week, I reached the edge of my patience when they started climbing my screen door, upside down and doing somersaults through the small metal trellis I had in a planter. I couldn’t even manage to capture a picture for you because I was 1) beside myself in anger and 2) terrified that they were rabid and going to somehow get into my house.

I’ve read many articles…and contemplated paintballs, slingshots and other weapons of choice,…but the most repeated phrase was “if there’s nothing there for them to chew, they’ll leave”.  Apparently squirrels are like beavers, in that if they don’t chew, their teeth outgrow their head. Gross.

At one point, I thought of giving it all up.  I wouldn’t go out on the balcony at all. That lasted all of 5 minutes when I remembered the summer the balconies were redone and I couldn’t go out there at all. I was miserable all summer.

Call it a change of strategy, or waving the white flag of defeat,  Saturday while my parents enjoyed wine tasting and driving by the lakeside, I got rid of everything a squirrel could chew.  I got rid of all but one planter and will only be planting some small flowers in pots.  The wooden patio set is gone and replaced with a metal and glass table. I swept all the small branches and pieces of cardboard (they chewed the box of bone meal…which is supposed to keep them away because it’s made of…well, ground up animal bones) away and reorganized my summer sanctuary.

I haven’t picked up the flowers yet, but I’m already thrilled with my reclaimed space.  Don’t worry, I take the cushions in when I’m not out there…I’m not taking any chances!

The rain has held up so far today, so if you need me…I’ll be on the patio!

Happy {holiday} Monday!

Let the war begin

I went out on my balcony to set up the patio set, so I could enjoy the outside while I type up some reports…and this is what I found:

That damn squirrel!! I’m going to win the war this year…I just haven’t figured out exactly how…I have a few ideas, but they may or may not be legal.

Happy Wednesday!

Stampendous Changito in a TTIC double challenge; and my first digi stamp card

I have quite a few birthday cards to make for June, so I decided to use the June TTIC sketch layout for one of them.  I did have to alter it slightly, but since this card is for a boy, I couldn’t add any flowers to it! lol

I haven’t inked up my Changito stamp in far too long and thought he would be perfect for this birthday card for my friend Chris (my Godson Ethan’s dad).   This is also a double TTIC entry because I combined the June sketch with this past Tuesday’s challenge-  Summer!

Summer is my favourite season, my birthday happens in the summer, we go to the cabin, bonfires and days at the beach. Ahhhhh.  I grew up in a city with 15 lakes within the main city limits, so I was never far from the beach, and it was fantastic.

Ok, on to the cards!

Changitobeach1.1

Here he is! isn’t he adorable!  I just love this little guy…but he did give me some trouble.  I had to colour 3 images before I was happy with the final product…don’t you hate when that happens!

I wanted this to look like Changito had it in the water with him, so there’s lots of paper tearing and distressing (which is fast becoming my new favourite thing to do to paper) and I’m happy with the way it turned out.

Changitobeach2.1

I used Crystal effects for the inner tube, snorkel, goggles and fins to give it that authentic plastic look.

I have to say, I think the sentiment is my all-time favourite, and it was the reason I bought the stamp in the first place!

Changitobeach3.1

It still makes me giggle!

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to win some blog candy from my friend Andrea which happened to be a digital stamp from The Character Cafe named Syd the Squirrel.  Now, you know how I feel about squirrels!…but I think this guy has got a place in my heart :)

Syd the Squirrel1.1

Digi stamps let me practice colouring…and Syd was no different than Changito…it took me 3 times to get it how I wanted it, but that’s the great thing about digi stamps…just print it again!

Syd the Squirrel2.1

I used SU Creamy Caramel and Close to Cocoa ink with my water painter and layered and layered…I’m not patient with waiting for the layer to dry, so I need to get better at that!

I added some SU pretty in pink to his ears, nose and a little on his cheek.  I used Crystal effects on his eyes and on the tops of the acorns…he reminds me of Puss in Boots from Shrek- don’t you think?

You should really go check out The Character Cafe, they have so many images for so many occasions, and they’re a lot of fun to colour.  You might be seeing a lot of them around here very soon…*hint hint nudge nudge*…

Don’t forget to check out Twilighttuesday.com for the weekly challenges and all around good fun!

Happy Sunday!

Ciao for now,

*edited to add*…I found out my birthday card also qualifies for the Sissy Scrap Birthday card challenge! whohoo!!

Squirrel-capades: The Weekend Edition

DSC08012 I fired up the BBQ for the first time yesterday, after first buying the wrong propane tank, and having to go back out to the store to buy the correct one.

As I was installing the propane tank (my BBQ uses the small tanks used for blow torches),  I noticed something in the drip pan.  What the devil…

Apparently this squirrel likes roasted peanuts.

Happy Saturday!

Squirrel-capades Episode 1: And then there were two…

DSC00313 Anyone who knows me knows I love to garden.  If it weren’t for all the upkeep that I don’t really want right now (and the fact that I travel so much), I’d have a house, just so I could have a garden.

27-08-06_0932

I make do with container gardens on my balcony; flower boxes,  large potters,  and a trellis.  I love sweet peas, morning glories, hydrangeas and geraniums.

Anyone who knows I love to garden knows I hate squirrels.  I mean HATE them.  London is rampant with squirrels all year round.  I hate the noise they make, I hate the trail of peanut shells they leave, I hate their beady little eyes and their bushy tails.  But most of all, I HATE how they destroy my garden.  I can’t even begin to add up the money that has been dug up by those damn squirrels.

I have a downstairs neighbor (I live on the 2nd floor), God bless her, but she feeds the birds and the squirrels and so they are always around. I’ve tried cayenne pepper on the soil, I’ve tried squirting them with water (only works when you catch them) and the only thing that seems to remotely work, sometimes, is blood meal.  The smell drives them away, but drives me away too, and attracts an awful amount of flies if you don’t mix it into the soil well enough.  You also have to keep applying it, or the smell comes back and so do the squirrels.  The thought of a paint gun or bb-gun has often come to mind….but I digress.

I decided to take advantage of the good weather and sweep the balcony before it rains tomorrow.  That’s when I was cleaning up my planting shelf and found this:

One of my garden tools.  Notice anything suspicious? Lets take a closer look, shall we:

DSC07737

That’s right.  Apparently all the bird seed and peanuts in the world does not compare to the tastiness that is plastic on a $3 garden tool.  WTF?? Seriously! This squirrel has taken it to a whole new level! Or so I thought…

DSC07738

I got back to sweeping, moved some giant pots and found this stack of leaves, and cardboard, and all this other stuff.  What in the world?? I started sweeping it out from the corner and then I heard it:

SQUEEK SQUEEK SQUEEK

Mother of Pearl please do not tell me….oh that’s right.

It’s a bloody squirrel nest!   Before I knew it, Mama had returned, who I chased off with a broom just to grab some composure.  I don’t want to have to the hospital on a Saturday night for a rabies shot!

Now, I am not completely cold hearted.  The baby squirrel is naked and tiny and so ugly it’s damn heartbreaking.  But the last thing I need is for them to think they can start building condo’s on my balcony.  I don’t want them posting a sign saying  “Home is where the Nest is” and completely destroy all flowers and seedlings I hope to plant this year.

I went back out to take these pictures for this post, and Mama had come back and I’m pretty sure was carrying the ugly naked baby in her mouth fleeing to the 3rd floor.

I hope they find the view from the 3rd floor just spectacular, and start developing their condo up there.

I know it’s not the end of my encounter with squirrels, it just seems to be starting earlier this year.

Stay tuned my friends, there will be more stories to tell, you can bet your tulips there will be.
